A clear guide to Mangal Dosh before marriage — which houses are usually counted, when the dosha is treated as cancelled, what a Mangal Graha Jaap includes, and what it costs.
Mangal Dosh, often called Manglik dosha, is a matching factor in marriage astrology. It is not a character flaw and it is not a curse on the person. It is a statement about where Mars sits in the birth chart, used by many North Indian families when they compare two kundlis before a wedding. A Mangal Graha Jaap is the priest-led Mars shanti that families book when an astrologer has asked for a remedy before the marriage, or when Mars is under pressure in the chart for reasons other than marriage.
This guide covers how the dosha is usually identified, the cancellations that are easy to miss, what the jaap consists of, and cost. Matching rules are not identical in every sampradaya. If two pandits have given you two answers, that is common; the useful next step is to have one person read both charts in full rather than to collect more screenshots.
How Mangal Dosh is usually identified
The rule most matchers use: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna (ascendant). Some traditions also check the same houses from the Moon and from Venus, and treat the dosha as stronger when it repeats from more than one of these.
Mars in the 7th is the placement families worry about most, because the 7th is the marriage house. Mars in the 1st or 8th is also treated seriously in many matching systems. Mars in a kendra or trikona with strength, aspect or sign dignity is not automatically "bad Mars" — dignity and house are different questions. A chart can show Mangal Dosh by the house rule and still have a Mars that gives courage, property and initiative.
When families treat the dosha as reduced or cancelled
These are widely cited exceptions. They are not a loophole list to apply to yourself without reading the chart.
- Both partners have Mangal Dosh. Many matchers then treat the factor as matched rather than as a block. The houses need not be identical.
- Mars in its own signs (Mesha, Vrishchika) or exalted in Makara. Some traditions reduce the dosha when Mars has dignity.
- Mars with benefics, or under a condition your family pandit already accepts. Lists of "14 cancellations" circulating online mix classical points with later shortcuts. Prefer the rule your own matcher uses, and ask him to write down which exception he applied.
- Age and delay. A few communities relax the concern after a certain age. That is a social custom, not a astronomical event.
If the only reason for the jaap is marriage, do the matching first. A Mangal Graha Jaap does not delete Mars from the 7th house. It is a shanti performed so the family can proceed with a clearer conscience and a stated sankalp. Couples who are both Manglik often do not need a remedy for this dosha at all.
When a Mangal Graha Jaap is actually the right booking
Consider it when:
- A matcher or astrologer has asked for Mars shanti before a wedding date is fixed, and the exception rules above were already checked
- Mars is the graha named for anger, accidents, property disputes or blood-related health concerns in a consultation — separate from marriage
- The family wants a Tuesday rite in the groom's or bride's name as part of wedding preparation, alongside the usual Griha Shanti and not instead of the legal and family arrangements
Skip it when the two charts already match on this point, or when nobody has read the chart and the fear comes only from a Sun-sign post. In that case a kundli reading is the cheaper and more honest first step.
Vidhi
A Mangal Graha Jaap on this service is about 2 to 3 hours.
- Sankalp in the name of the person whose chart has the dosha, with marriage (or the other stated purpose) named.
- Invocation of Ganesha and Mangal.
- Jaap, most often "Om Kram Krim Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" or "Om Mangalaya Namah", for a count agreed in the booking.
- Offerings associated with Mars: red flowers, red sandalwood where the tradition uses it, wheat or jaggery preparations, and a simple naivedya. Temples dedicated to Hanuman or Kartikeya are also traditional places for Mars-related prayers, because both are linked with Mangal in popular practice.
- Aarti, prasad, and a short remedy note.
The jaap can be done for one person. It does not have to be done twice if only one chart carries the dosha. If both carry it and you still want a blessing rather than a "cancellation", one sankalp naming both people is enough — confirm that with the priest.
Muhurat
Tuesday is the ordinary day. The morning is preferred. If a wedding muhurat has already been chosen, families often complete the jaap on a Tuesday before that date, not on the wedding day itself. A chart-specific muhurat from your astrologer takes priority over the generic Tuesday.
Cost
Starting prices for a standard Mangal Graha Jaap:
| Format | Starting price | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Online | ₹4,000 | 2–3 hours |
| Standard listed rate | ₹4,800 | 2–3 hours |
| Temple | ₹5,500 | 2–3 hours |
| Home visit | ₹6,800 | 2–3 hours, plus travel |
Wedding season and a request to perform the rite in the home alongside other pre-wedding pujas can change the home-visit quote. Ask for one quote that lists every rite, so Mars shanti is not billed twice.
Related choices
- If the matcher also flagged Saturn, a separate Shani Graha Shanti Jaap is a different booking.
- If the objection is ancestral rather than Mars, look at Pitru Dosh remedies instead of repeating Mars jaap.
- If you do not have a reliable matching note yet, start with a Janam Kundli and a consultation. You may find the dosha is not active.
Frequently asked questions
Does Mangal Dosh mean the marriage will fail? No. It means Mars occupies a house that matchers examine. Plenty of Manglik people have stable marriages, especially when both charts carry the same factor or when Mars is strong. The dosha is a prompt to look carefully, not a prediction of divorce.
Can the jaap be done after the wedding? Yes, as Mars worship. As a pre-marriage matching remedy, families prefer it before the wedding date. Doing it later is still a valid religious act; it is just no longer part of the matching process.
The software said Manglik and the pandit said not Manglik. Who is right? Software applies one house rule and rarely applies the exceptions. A pandit who saw both charts and named the exception is more useful than the badge on an app. Ask him which house he counted from — Lagna, Moon or Venus.
Is a Mangal dosh puja different from this jaap? Temples and vendors use both names. On this site the booked service is Mangal Graha Jaap: priest, stated mantra count, sankalp, and samagri. If someone offers a "puja" with no count and no sankalp in your name, ask what exactly will be recited.
Booking
Share both people's names and birth details if the context is marriage, the matcher's written note if you have one, the city, and the format (online, home or temple). If the wedding date is close, say so in the first message.
