Pitru Dosh: Pitru Shanti, Tripindi Shraddha or Narayan Nagbali?

PoojaPath Digital16 October 20267 min read

How to tell these three ancestral rites apart — a short Pitru Dosh Nivaran puja, Tripindi Shraddha for three generations, and the three-day Narayan Nagbali at Trimbakeshwar — with cost and when each is traditionally chosen.

Families looking up Pitru Dosh usually find three different rituals sold under similar words: a one-day Pitru Dosh Nivaran Puja, a Tripindi Shraddha, and a three-day Narayan Nagbali at Trimbakeshwar. They are not three sizes of the same product. Each one answers a different situation. Booking the longest rite "to be safe" is how people spend heavily on a ritual their own case did not require.

This guide separates the three, using the services that can actually be arranged, and says plainly when the expensive Trimbakeshwar rite is the one priests ask for.

What people mean by Pitru Dosh

In matching and remedial consultations, Pitru Dosh is a name for ancestral disturbance in the chart or in the family story. Astrologers look for patterns such as affliction to the ninth house or its lord, the Sun, or certain combinations they associate with unpaid rites to the pitrs. Families describe a parallel set of events: repeated obstacles in marriage or childbirth, a sense that elders' rites were left incomplete, or a death in the family that never received shraddha.

These signs are a reason to look properly, not a diagnosis you should pin on yourself from a list. A kundli reading can tell you whether a pitru remedy was recommended at all. The family history tells you which rite fits: a general shanti, a missed shraddha for three generations, or a kshetra rite after an untimely or unnatural death.

Pitru Dosh Nivaran Puja

Choose this when an astrologer has mentioned pitru-related obstruction, the family does not have a specific untimely death to address, and you want a formal shanti in a living person's name. It is the shortest of the three. The priest takes a sankalp, performs the pitru shanti worship, and guides the family on what a normal yearly shraddha should look like afterwards.

It is also the right first booking when you are unsure. A short pitru shanti does not block you from doing Tripindi or Narayan Nagbali later if a fuller reading shows they are needed. Doing Narayan Nagbali first "just in case", when there is no untimely death and no nag dosha in the advice you received, is the decision to avoid.

Starting prices: online ₹3,800, standard listed rate ₹4,500, temple ₹5,500, home visit ₹6,500. Duration is 2 to 3 hours. The package includes the pandit, samagri, prasad and remedy guidance.

Tripindi Shraddha

Tripindi is a shraddha for the father, grandfather and great-grandfather — three generations — performed when those rites were missed, done incompletely, or the family is no longer sure they were done at all. It is still a one-day ritual (about 2 to 4 hours), not a three-day kshetra stay. Pinda and tarpana samagri are part of the arrangement, and the priest should tell you how yearly shraddha continues after this.

Choose Tripindi when the family story is "we did not do shraddha", not when the story is "there was an accident, a suicide, or a death without rites". Those cases are why Narayan Nagbali exists as a separate service.

It can be booked online, at home or at a temple. Starting prices: online ₹4,500, standard listed rate ₹5,500, temple ₹6,500, home visit ₹7,500.

The preferred timing is Pitru Paksha or Amavasya. The tithi of a known death is also appropriate when a priest advises it. This year's Pitru Paksha is over; you do not have to wait a full year. An Amavasya Tripindi in the coming months is a normal booking, and the next Pitru Paksha is the preferred window if there is no urgency.

Narayan Nagbali Puja

This is the rite that should stay rare in a shopping-cart sense. It is a three-day temple ritual associated with Trimbakeshwar. Narayan Bali is performed in the tradition that addresses restless rites after unnatural or untimely death. Nagbali is joined to it for serpent-related karma as described in Garuda Purana practice. The service includes coordination with a tamrapatradhari or an experienced Trimbakeshwar priest, samagri for three days, and guidance on stay and temple timing.

It is not offered as an online puja or a home visit. The place is part of the rite. Starting cost is ₹15,000 on the listed service, with temple coordination from ₹18,000. Travel and stay in Nashik are separate from the priest's fee.

Choose it when a priest who has heard the family history has asked for Narayan Nagbali specifically: an unnatural death, a death whose rites could not be performed, or a nag dosha concern tied to that tradition. Do not choose it only because it costs more and therefore "feels" more complete.

Dates follow Amavasya-linked openings and are especially sought in Pitru Paksha. The exact Trimbakeshwar slot has to be confirmed; it is not a ritual you start on an arbitrary morning at home.

A simple way to decide

  1. Get a written reason. Either a kundli note that names a pitru remedy, or a family fact (missed shraddha, or an untimely death).
  2. If the fact is a missed shraddha across generations, book Tripindi Shraddha.
  3. If the fact is an untimely or unnatural death, or a priest has named Nagbali, plan Narayan Nagbali Puja at Trimbakeshwar and confirm dates before you travel.
  4. If you only have a general pitru indication and no such fact, book Pitru Dosh Nivaran Puja, or start with a consultation before any of the three.

Kalsarp-related worship is a different question. Kaal Sarp Dosh is about Rahu and Ketu axis placements, not about pindas. A family can need one, the other, or neither. Do not stack every dosha ritual in the same week unless someone has read the chart and asked for that combination.

Frequently asked questions

Can Tripindi be done outside Pitru Paksha? Yes. Amavasya and a advised death tithi are accepted times. Pitru Paksha is preferred, not the only lawful date.

We live abroad. Can someone attend Narayan Nagbali for us? The Trimbakeshwar rite is performed with the person who holds the sankalp, according to the priest's requirement for that slot. Ask before you book travel. It is not a remote online ritual, so "we will watch on a link" is the wrong assumption. The one-day Pitru Dosh Nivaran Puja and Tripindi Shraddha can be arranged online.

Will these rites guarantee marriage or a child? No. They are ancestral rites. Families book them when those rites were pending and when childbirth or marriage delay was part of the consultation. They sit beside medical care and the usual marriage arrangements, not in place of them.

What if we do not know the names of three generations? Tell the priest. Tripindi can still be performed with the names you do know and a general sankalp for the unnamed generations. Guessing names is worse than saying you do not know.

Booking

Write which of the three you were advised to do, who advised it, the city, and the names available for the sankalp. If you were not advised and you are choosing from search results, say that too — the shorter pitru shanti, or a kundli session first, is usually the correct starting point.
